How AI will revolutionise clinical trials
The increasing use of artificial intelligence looks set to revolutionise the pharmaceutical industry over the next few years.
There are implications for drug discovery, the development of highly targeted precision medicines and the potential to identify new treatment targets and repurpose existing drugs.
But one area that could be particularly significant is the introduction of affective computing and social signal processing to clinical trials with the potential to make such trials more efficient and effective.

The world is currently facing a mental health crisis post pandemic.
The World Health Organisation estimates that nearly a billion people worldwide are living with a mental disorder. In Europe around half of young people in the EU and a quarter of adults have unmet mental health needs whilst in the UK 8 million people in England with mental health problems cannot get specialist help because they are not considered sick enough to qualify.
These are sobering and miserable statistics. That is why in 2019 I and some of my colleagues at the University of Nottingham set up Blueskeye AI.
BlueSkeye AI awarded £20,000 for aerospace research project.
Blueskeye AI has been awarded £20,000 to investigate how face sensing technology can be used to obtain insights about human behaviour in the aircraft cockpit.
The research will identify the key drivers, enablers and barriers to using such technology in aircraft cockpits. It could pave the way for their adoption by the aerospace sector enhancing passenger and crew safety.

Blueskeye AI has been nominated for the Innovation Award at the annual Medilink Midlands Business Awards taking place at the University of Birmingham on 16 March.
The Award, sponsored by intellectual property lawyers Barker Bretell, recognises the development of an innovative technology, design or process that has produced a major improvement in business performance and impacted the market.

Healthtech start-up BlueSkeye AI raises £3.4m to transform mental health diagnoses
Award winning, early stage Healthtech company, BlueSkeye AI Ltd, has secured £3.4m in funding to pursue its mission to improve people’s quality of life through the use of its proprietary face and voice analysis technology. The round was led by XTX Ventures, which invested alongside Foresight Group (through The Midlands Engine Investment Fund), Praetura Ventures (through Praetura’s GMC Life Sciences Fund), the University of Nottingham and a consortium of high-net-worth individuals.

I interned at BlueSkeye AI, a company that delivers ethical AI for supporting mental health for the vulnerable population using facial and voice behaviour analysis. The long term vision of BlueSkeye AI is to ’Create AI you can trust for a better future, together.’ The goals of my PhD aligns perfectly well with that of BlueSkeye, where comprehending various facial behaviours to recognise markers of mood disorders forms a core part of the work. The company BlueSkeye AI is cofounded by my PhD supervisor Prof Michel Valstar and the teammates include several of my past PhD colleagues. The following pointers are my reflections on my four-month-long internship at BlueSkeye AI.

Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week
Maternal mental health awareness week is taking place this week, a campaign to raise awareness of mental health problems during and after pregnancy, to change attitudes surrounding maternal mental health and to advocate for mums to be able to access the information and support they need. During pregnancy and the postnatal period, many mothers experience heightened anxiety, feelings of isolation, judgement and guilt which are linked to pre-and postnatal depression and other mental health problems.
