Why the Mobile Phone is crucial to tackling the World’s growing mental health crisis.

The world is currently facing a mental health crisis post pandemic.

The World Health Organisation estimates that nearly a billion people worldwide are living with a mental disorder. In Europe around half of young people in the EU and a quarter of adults have unmet mental health needs whilst in the UK 8 million people in England with mental health problems cannot get specialist help because they are not considered sick enough to qualify.

These are sobering and miserable statistics. That is why in 2019 I and some of my colleagues at the University of Nottingham set up Blueskeye AI.

Blueskeye AI has been awarded £20,000 to investigate how face sensing technology can be used to obtain insights about human behaviour in the aircraft cockpit.

The research will identify the key drivers, enablers and barriers to using such technology in aircraft cockpits. It could pave the way for their adoption by the aerospace sector enhancing passenger and crew safety.

Award winning, early stage Healthtech company, BlueSkeye AI Ltd, has secured £3.4m in funding to pursue its mission to improve people’s quality of life through the use of its proprietary face and voice analysis technology. I interned at BlueSkeye AI, a company that delivers ethical AI for supporting mental health for the vulnerable population using facial and voice behaviour analysis. The long term vision of BlueSkeye AI is to ’Create AI you can trust for a better future, together.’ The goals of my PhD aligns perfectly well with that of BlueSkeye, where comprehending various facial behaviours to recognise markers of mood disorders forms a core part of the work.
